Snowstorms blow through Ontario, Quebec, hits East Coast
Source: News article from ctv.ca , March 2, 2007

Western regions of the Maritimes are already feeling the effects of a deadly snowstorm that wreaked havoc in parts of southern Ontario yesterday.

The snow has begun to fall in parts of New Brunswick as other areas of Atlantic Canada brace for an evening of wild weather.Up to 20 centimetres of snow are expected in some areas around the Maritimes.

Nova Scotia Power and NB Power have crews on standby while management monitors the grids for any abnormalities or surges.

The storm knocked out power for at least 75,000 people in southern Ontario.

Hydro One Spokeperson Al Manchee told CTV.ca that more power outages are expected as the storm moves east.

"We've got in the order of about 75,000 to 80,000 out across the province on our systems," said Manchee.

There is still no timeframe as to when power will be restored, but some customers could remain in the dark until early next week.

Thousands of Toronto residents are also without electricity Friday as ice pulled down wires and snapping trees severed lines.

Power Surges can Fry your Sensitive Electronics

Some call it a blip...Others a surge.

Owners of electronic equipment have another name for it: trouble.

Power bumps, which are often associated with lightning strikes during summer thunderstorms, happen all year long.

According to Toronto Hydro, they can be caused by a major electrical grid interruption or fault, the restoration of power after a blackout or even when a heavy use electrical appliance in your home - like an air conditioner or your furnace - kicks in. A surge can range from 100 volts to thousands. And while the blip temporarily turns out the power for you, it can be lights out for your equipment. Strong surges can fry electronics in a heartbeat, damaging or completely destroying unprotected computers or other gear with sensitive components. And even if your gadgets still work, experts claim repeated surge exposure can take years off their performance lifetime.

In an age where electronics have increasingly taken centre stage, that's one reason why officials suggest
you have reliable surge protectors at work and at home. Hydro claims you should look for protection that not only safeguards where you plug in the devices but one that stops the spike where electricity actually enters the facility.
